Wayne has been a member of Rocky Mountain Water Environment Association (RMWEA), and Rocky Mountain Sector American Water Works Association (RMSAWWA) since 1985, and started his career in the small town of Cedaredge, Colorado as a Water and Wastewater Systems Operator.

It all began in earnest in 1987 as an operator trainee for the wastewater treatment plant in the City of Louisville, Colorado. Wayne was fascinated by the biological workings of an activated sludge plant and his enthusiasm led him to the superintendent's position in 1989. Three years later, the City of Louisville won the U.S. EPA Region VIII Excellence Award and the National 1st Place Award for Operations and Maintenance Excellence from the EPA in 1992.

As his career evolved he joined the Professional Wastewater Operators Division (PWOD) of the RMWEA and was elected as their representative in 1993, with responsibilities that included the curriculum for the Annual Operator Training Conference. A born educator, Wayne is also an instructor for the Colorado Water and Wastewater Short Course, at the University of Colorado, which he's taught since 1996.

Wayne was hired by the City and County of Broomfield, Colorado as the Superintendent of Wastewater Treatment in 1994 and promoted to the Deputy Director of Public Works five years later overseeing the Wastewater Plant, Water Distribution and Wastewater Collections Division, Streets and Drainage Division, and the Parks Maintenance Division.

In 2003 Wayne renewed an interest in consulting and contract operations that was started in 1992 as Ramey Environmental Compliance, where he is currently president.
